At least getting back to baseline cleanliness

I finally got off work early enough to get something done in the afternoon, so today I left the hospital at 3, got a coffee on the way home, and started trying to sift through my disaster of an apartment.

Those clothes have been piled all over the place for days. Also notice twisted comforter that I haven't bothered to make up for two weeks and powder spilled all over the dresser.

It only took me four hours but here are the "after" pictures.

And then we had grilled cheese and soup for supper. Split pea this time- trying to shake things up.

Pho Bien Hoa!

Warm delicious Vietnamese noodle soup! There's no graceful way to do it.

And that would be Holland drinking a durian shake - sick!

Officially given up

My house is a disaster and, most uncharacteristically, I don't even care. I just want to sleep. And wake up and run and take a bath and sleep some more.

Grilled cheese and soup has become Holland and my go-to dinner. We eat it at least once or twice a week. If you get special bread from Great Harvest and special cheese from Liberty Height Fresh (a really fun gourmet grcery about 100 yards from my house), it really kind of jazzes things up.

And here's a picture of Jipsy "helping" Holland read. Note the close proximty of her face to whatever he's trying to view.

Songkran Festival!

Songkran festival! The Thai/Lao New Year! We saw a flyer at the Thai restaurant for a celebration at a wat (Thai Buddhist temple) about 30 minutes away, so we went! It was really fun and there were plenty of non-Thai folks there.

Making Holland's papaya salad

What you can't see are Holland's eye watering and nose running a couple of minutes after taking this bite.

There was also Thai boxing set to some very strange music and a beauty pageant for Miss Songkran. A good time was had by all.

Salt Lake City Bees opening night!

And lest you need yet another example of what kind of lives interns lead, ya'll should just know that I slept through AN EARTHQUAKE while I was post-call yesterday. I woke up this morning and saw that my mom called me while I was driving to work. In her voice mail she said, "I heard ya'll had a rumbling last night!" I was like what? A thunderstorm? I don't remember a thunderstorm.

Then I got to work and started my rounds and one of my patients told me about a 4.9 earthquake in Randolph, UT (wherever that is) yesterday around 5:30PM. My medical students were both like yeah! I felt it, it was scary! And I was like what? Where was I? Oh yeah, completely zonked.

post-call

This is my resident, Kim, and our two medical students during a rare lull in our day on call. They are watching Kim's dogs at Dog Mode on the Dog Mode webcam. Dog Mode is a dog daycare/boarding facility in the Salt Lake area that sets up webcams so you can watch your dogs play with the other dogs while you are at work.

I apologize for the poor quality of this photograph - unfortunately, the iPhone camera doesn't do too well with close ups! But I thought you guys HAD to see this. It is my Utah state tax return and it pretty much sums up the entire state of Utah in one picture. Look very closely and you will see that "tax due" = sad face and "refund"= happiness.

Happinessssssss

So I've been driving around on a rear passenger side tire with a leak for at least two months. About once or twice a week, I'll notice that it's looking pretty flat and think "That's not good" and go fill it up at the gas station. Well, finally, today I had my first day off in two weeks and was able to go get my tire patched. It cost all of 17 bucks. When I got in my car after they were done and started to drive off, I noticed something that looked like a part to one of their tools or something on my dash. I ran back in and handed it to them only to find out it was my wheel lock key. Who knew? My dad would be so proud after all his efforts in teaching me things car-related.

Among many other long-delayed errands that I ran today was taking my laundry to the Sunshine Center. I've been doing my laundry at Holland's house to try to save money, but this month I just decided that my time was worth the $1 a pound that my drop laundry service charges. It cost me a grand total of $33 and was worth every penny. And everything comes folded up in such neat little packages with an impossibly tight knot on the top! As you can see, Jipsy is performing her routine inspection to make sure everything is up to standard.

April showers

How on earth is it time for my MAY Real Simple to get here? How is it already spring?

I came home today from 30 hours on call and look! The tulips have bloomed.

um, where was all of this in January?

So this was Easter morning.

And this is tonight, April 5. A freaking blizzard blew through! Driving to work at the crack of dawn before the snow plows are out is not going to be very fun. It sure is pretty tonight, though.

the rest of our day of freedom

Holland shaved y'all! The burly winter beard of two months is gone.

We found an Argentine bakery today while running errands. It just opened and the guy was super nice and gave us all kinds of samples. We bought all of this for a little under five bucks. Der-liciois. And the caramel is homemade!

My new favorite wine - Man Vintner Chenin Blanc

We went back up to Park City tonight for Holland's brother Rob's 30th birthday dinner.

Happy Birfday Rob! (seen here with his lovely fiancée Rachel)

....aaaand it's still snowing

It's so pretty this morning! Jipsy accidentally got left outside all night. As you can imagine, there has been a lot of panicked meowing and swatting at my feet since I let her back in.

Today is day #2 of Step 3. We have to do these awful clinical cases using a very primitive and confusing interactive computer program. But still vastly preferable to being on wards.
